Enough filing through an enormous amount of data around Antony’s activities had brought me his birth name. Antony was only one of his false identities, but he was already being scrutinized by law enforcement. He had genuine bratva connections, but it was clear to me that he cared more about wining and dining people he believed to be important than actually wielding real power.

I knew I needed to call Sergei, who was placed within the ranks of the local arm of the bratva.

“Hello?” He would have seen my number. I had to make it brief, because if anybody knew that I was calling him and who I was, it could mean death. I wouldn’t call Sergei lightly.

“I need your help.”

“I’m listening.”

“There’s a girl I’m protecting for Grey. She’s being blackmailed by a man going by the name of Antony.” I filled in his birth name, but I didn’t think that Sergei would need it. “He was behind a small digital bank robbery. He also claims that the encryption used at that bank is the same one that the NSA uses.”

“I know of him, though nobody has ever seen major moves from him. Antony is always hanging onto much bigger men. I know that Antony has been claiming that he has a way to make everything we do easier in Moscow, but he won’t tell anybody. I think he’s full of hot air.”

I was sure that Sergei was telling me that Antony was nothing. “I know about the NSA effort.”

“What is he doing?”

“He wants the girl to send him the name of the NSA agents in Moscow.”

Sergei exploded in Russian. “It would impress the higher-ups and get him respect.”

“What can you do?”

Sergei paused for a few moments. “I’ll ask around and see if anybody has an idea of Antony’s big idea. I’ll communicate if it’s important. If you don’t hear anything, it’s because there’s a ton of smoke but nothing real.”

“Got it.” I ended the call. Sergei was careful to delete digital traces of calls like mine from his phone. The metadata about it would reside on servers that he couldn’t control, but the mafia would need to know his government-controlled phone’s information before they dug into it. If they tried, alerts would go off. Sergei had been deeply planted for a long time, and he maintained his cover by not making any mistakes. The life of a spy wasn’t easy at all. I didn’t envy him.

I had known him for a long time. I had a little training with him when we were pulled into being intelligence analysts all those years ago. I’d gone on to work outside of the government in security analysis. He had taken a clandestine role, partially because he had been fluent in Russian from birth. I thanked my lucky stars that I met Tia as an adult and not as someone who had sworn his life over to his country. There was a Leverage episode where Elliot, the guy who was former military, talked about making conflicting promises to both his sweetheart and the US government.
